Principal Gifts and Capital Campaign Officer
UNCF envisions a nation where all Americans have equal access to a college education that prepares them for rich intellectual lives, competitive and fulfilling careers, engaged citizenship and service to our nation.
Founded in 1944, the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) has raised more than $5 billion to help over 500,000 students thrive in college, graduate, and become leaders. To achieve its ambitious mission, UNCF awards 10,000 student scholarships, valued at $100 million, annually, provides financial support to a prestigious network of 37 historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and serves as our nation’s leading advocate for minority education and engagement.
UNCF is at an exciting moment in its 77-year history. As the organization moves forward, UNCF is motivated by the impact of the twin pandemics: a national social justice reckoning and COVID-19, which disproportionately impacted minority communities with the loss of family members, unemployment, food insecurity, evictions, and unsafe working conditions. To meet these challenges, UNCF is contemplating an unprecedented $1 billion capital campaign to support four (4) strategic priorities: 1) strengthening UNCF’s member HBCU network; 2) empowering students of color; 3) supporting faculty; and 4) fortifying UNCF’s operating funds and endowment. In parallel, UNCF’s annual fund regularly meets its $100 million goal.
UNCF seeks a Principal Gifts and Capital Campaign Officer (Principal Gifts Officer). S/he will partner with UNCF’s President and CEO, Dr. Michael Lomax; UNCF’s Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer, Maurice Jenkins, Jr.; and CCS campaign counsel to design, oversee, and implement a comprehensive campaign plan for UNCF’s proposed $1 billion effort. The successful candidate will focus on principal gifts and work in partnership with the UNCF President and CEO to develop and solicit an increasingly refined and well-researched pool of transformational principal gift prospects.
The successful candidate will provide dynamic leadership, strategic direction, and operational management in alignment with UNCF’s mission and strategic priorities. S/he will have experience creating a campaign Case for Support, expressions of gift recognition opportunities, and campaign-related collateral materials. To ensure the success of the effort, the ideal Principal Gifts Officer will lead campaign execution of the potential prospect and donor constituencies, including the expansion of individual, corporate, and foundation support. The candidate will have the demonstrated ability to recruit and lead a staff for the anticipated $1 billion capital campaign.
The Principal Gifts Officer will report to Dr. Michael Lomax, President and Chief Executive Officer. The successful candidate will partner with UNCF’s Board Chair, National Campaign Chair(s), and other core volunteer leaders in support of UNCF’s Capital Campaign.
The candidate will foster a collegial relationship with UNCF’s Executive Vice President and Chief Development Officer and the Development Department to ensure an inclusive, transparent, and coordinated effort with respect to all UNCF-related fundraising. S/he will partner with executive UNCF leaders in finance, planning, and human resources. In addition, the candidate will serve as UNCF’s liaison to outside campaign counsel, CCS.
